Minutes for Nov 19, 2009

Present: President Sue Carlson, Vice-President Roslyn Strong, Treasurer Ruth Bryant, Secretary Jo Cameron, Zibette Dean, Marsha Potter, Cathy Orne

The minutes of October 25 were received unanimously

Treasurer's report: Starting balance of $1,891.48; income: dues $35; interest $.79, donation $45. No expenses. New balance: $1,972.27. The Treasurer's report was received unanimously.

Sue is gathering e-mail addresses, so that come March, we can do an aggressive membership drive.

FOFE report: Sue said it is a tough time to grow an organization. Discussion centered on the possibility of internships to replace a full-time site manager, and the replacement of the site boundary fence. Can the Lincoln County Economic Development Organization provide help to non-profits?

Ros asked what procedures to follow, could FOFE get donations from lumber suppliers like Hancock or Poole Brothers? Or at cost prices?

KCO: In re a quantity of "A History of Early Edgecomb," Ros wrote Connie Chase Wells concerning their purchase by EHS but has not yet heard from her. Connie's son Alan Roth-Wells is currently staying at the Chase house. She will approach him.

Another publication possibility is John Chase's history of the Edgecomb Fire Department, which might be EHS' gift to the EFD as a fundraiser. Apparently, Alan Roth-Wells has the manuscript, which has never been published.

Genealogy: Cathy and Jo reported quite a groundswell of genealogical questions.

  1. William Rackliffe (various spellings), down off the former Su Ripley property
  2. Moses Davis' daughters
  3. Marsha Potter is looking for Colbys in Edgecomb, descended from Frank Colby
  4. Ruth asked if anyone knew the death date of Mrs. [Addie?] Packard, whose North Edgecomb Cemetery family monument is the closest to the Town Hall. The monument shows her birth date only.

Cathy reviewed the steps she has taken in tracking down families: 1) Talk to older members of a given family; 2) Historical societies; 3) Town Hall vital records; 4. Courthouse for Registry of Deeds, maps, etc.; 5. Probate office; 6. Skidompha and Wiscasset libraries; 7. State Archives, which she has found to be disappointing; 8. On-line, she has found 75% trust-worthy

Note from Gertrude Allen: At age 97, she is no longer able to drive. Perhaps we could arrange to bring her to our meetings.

Inventory: Jo said she would carry on the inventory over the intervening months.

The meeting adjourned at 3:15 p.m. We will meet again on Thursday, March 25, at 2:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Joanna M. Cameron

Secretary
