Minutes for March 22, 2007

Present: Sue Carlson, Ros Strong, Jo Cameron, Ruth Bryant, Rebecca Townsend, Cathy Orne, Phyllis Grigg, Rebecca Graham, Marcia Potter.

President Sue Carlson opened the meeting by welcoming new members Rebecca Graham and Marcia Potter.

The minutes of the November 16, 2006 meeting were approved. Treasurer Ruth Bryant reported six new memberships and a $56.00 donation, as well as $7.47 in interest; the $35.00 non-profit incorporation renewal fee has been paid. The current balance is $3,159.26

Sue and other members explained the nature of the EHS, its current and past projects, for the benefit of the newcomers. Cathy Orne was appointed Genealogist, and given an e-mail query about the Cyrus Dodge family. Another query came in about possible Grenfell Inn locations in Maine. We agreed to tell the inquirer that we knew of none in Edgecomb.

Jo said that Tom Desjardin, author of Through A Howling Wilderness: Benedict Arnold's March to Quebec (St. Martin's Press, 2006) has agreed to speak at an evening meeting April 26, to start at 6:00 p.m.

The organizers of Maine National History Day sent a note of thanks for past support and a request for renewed support. Their 2007 theme will be "Triumph and Tragedy." It was unanimously voted to contribute $20.00. Since the purpose of Maine National History Day is to encourage the study of history in schools, EHS will turn over the material to the Edgecomb Eddy School's Edgecomb Explorers Club.

Reminding us that EHS' copies of the 1857 Edgecomb map will fade in the light, Sue said she had artists' fixative available for those who wish.

We all had a vivid time going through the EHS collection: an initial sort of books were put in acid-proof plastic bags; clippings in acid-proof file folders and envelopes according to a simple inventory form developed by Jo. Although we only managed to get through one file drawer, as well as miscellaneous items on the top of the filing cabinet and a small cabinet next to it, this will be an on-going process for the remaining Edgecomb Historical year.

Respectfully submitted,

Jo Cameron
